It’s been wonderful to see how both Nastia Liukin and Shawn Johnson translated their success as athletes into “brands”. Very few gymnasts have been able to do this in the past.
But the buzz on the blogosphere regarding her relationship with Olympic Figure Skating Champion Evan Lysacek led to this tweet …
Seems she later removed it. Sober second thought.
I’m sympathetic for Nastia. Relationships are difficult enough without a spotlight on your every move.
But you can’t have it both ways. No doubt her agent thinks this is great publicity.

I agree that you can’t have it both ways.. If you are a public figure, expect the media to jump in one every little thing you do/say/think!
Exactly Marieke! The media are great when she wants the publicity and deals etc but not now. Putting tweets out like that certainly isn’t going to help
Of course, if people minded their own business, Twitter wouldn’t exist…
On one hand. I sympathize. On the other, she’s going to either have to learn to get used to it or date people less in the public eye and come out of the public eye a bit herself. That’s part of being famous, baby!
I sympathize with Nastia BUT she herself told People that her an Evan were a couple and then Evan denied it…unfortunately for her, she more than opened the door for media scrutiny and when it backfired she got burnt & mad …definitely can’t have it both ways!
Well, she does say it’s a love/hate relationship. She probably knows that it’s part of being famous but I think no matter what anyone does for a living there’s parts of their job that they don’t like.
That’s interesting about Evan denying they are in a relationship after she said they were. Personally, that would be my cue to move on.
Mr. Lysak’s feather costume (and some other things) would my cue to move on. Is Nastia really this naive?
about evan denying it… where/when did he do this?? on the ET report he said they were very close friends and she is very supportive. that’s HARDLY denying a relationship. it never shows him saying he’s single and lonely… if there is video of him saying that, can someone share the link?? perhaps this was fabricated and that’s why nastia is mad??
I don’t count feathers as a cue. Maybe he just likes feathers. I’m not aware of the “other things” in question since I don’t follow figure skating.

I wonder if it’s a case of Evan not knowing whether he should admit it or not, either by advice of his publicist or it was something he might have assumed Nastia didn’t want the media to know, etc. Of course that would be one of the first things I’d talk about with someone I considered my boyfriend … hey we’re both famous, is this something we should tell the media? Seems like whatever they do have will be very fleeting, unless they both like relationships that appear to have little to no communication.
Jenny – all stories are covered more than once, hardly making media outlets or bloggers “copycats”. Reading these comments is beyond hilarious sometimes.

This really does scream stunt is my first impression. Then again, Nastia is young, and I’m sure she hasn’t had tons of time to even have a relationship let alone handle one in the spotlight. If they are together, and she said so, she was just being human! Considering Evan’s interesting past with female athletes, I’d say he’s working the media with more savvy than her. I just hope she doesn’t get hurt in all this. She may know the media is love/hate…but just discovering that significant others can be too!
