UPDATE:
… Acrobatic Gymnastics has been withdrawn from the competition program of the 2010 Pacific Rim Championships due to only two countries entering teams into the event …
What a shame.
=== original post from Feb. 10th:
These days my favourite form of competitive gymnastics is Acro. What amazing things can the human body do without any apparatus?
I keep hearing that discipline is dying. But here’s some good news:
Never before seen as part of the program, Acrobatic Gymnastics will be a demonstration sport at this year’s Pacific Rim Championships. The world’s best acrobats will be on show from April 29 – May 2

I’m so excited and REALLY hoping the USA, Russia, China and GBR send some groups. Pretty please…..
Australia will theoretically send two MX and 2 trios I think

Oops. Sorry Mimi.
Rick,
i’m seriously interested in your feedback on this issue….
while i recognize that acro, et.al. are all part of “movement sport”,
1. how do you perceive incorporating all under FIG umbrella has affected MAG and WAG?
2. (my bias is obvious if inferential)….if Acro, Tramp, Aerobics, why not Cheerleading (and X-games ‘stuff’) also as part of the FIG mission?
Good question, one I haven’t given much thought.
BASE PROGRAMS = Gymnastics and Trampoline

F.I.G. could stop there.
If they don’t, then there’s really no obvious place to stop. Ballroom dance?
In Australia many Artistic coaches were unhappy when Cheerleading was taken under their umbrella. “It’s taking over the Federation, was the complaint.”
I’ve personally got no complaint with any of the disciplines under F.I.G. now.
Rhythmic would be the first I’d see “go”. Too many potential problems with nutrition and overstretching.
I love that X Games is a totally commercial venture. An extreme alternative to the International Olympic Committee.
So annoyed this was cancelled, but what can you do when the particpation levels aren’t there?
In regards to the acro program being under the FIG and GA umbrella- I know the International Federation of Sports Acrobatics (as it was called) merged with FIG on the hope/promise that FIG could push the sport to the Olympic level by 2008… well that didn’t happen! Though I definitely see Acro as a branch of gymnastics (common equipment and the general skills of the sport). I think it is more ‘gymnastics’ than rhythmic and sports aerobics for sure
