WAG College Gymnastics updates

More commentary and video from weekend #3.

Gymnastike has Women’s College Gymnastics Rankings with links to videos from those meets. Nice!

And from Blythe Lawrence:

Just when you think that UCLA is looking like a prime contender for the 2010 NCAA title, the Bruins lose. To Stanford, which was defeated by Georgia during the first week of competition. But Georgia has lost to Utah, which has already been defeated by UCLA. So what are college gymnastics fans supposed to think now?

Well, we know that Alabama looks good. …

There are two main ways to lose (or get a lower score, because it’s not like football where you can “defend” against the other team and cause them to have fewer points…any points you lose, you pretty much do to yourself): falls and lower quality routines. A loss is a loss, to be certain. But a loss where the routines score low because that’s the nature of those routines and the skill of those gymnasts, is different from a loss where the routines are all high quality but there are falls. Stanford and UCLA had essentially equal scores but one counted one fall and the other two and that was the difference in the final score. The top 10 or so teams all seem to have enough depth and parity that you have to go 24 for 24 against them or you’re likely to lose. If you’re counting a fall, the other top teams are all too good and with everyone scoring 9.8 and 9.9, you’re not going to have enough wiggle room to overcome it.

General college gymnastics comment: I try very hard to never watch beam, so I don’t know how common it is, but Sarah Shire of Missouri is doing a 4-flight series on beam. I thought it was pretty cool. Just thought I’d give that a shout out. If it is common, then never mind.
