I've never heard of an online FIG judging course. Great idea, though.

I think that the best gymnastic judges are also coaches. This is because in the J.O. program there is very little emphasis on technique. It is all about specific deductions and as a result the big picture can be lost. For example should bending the first arm on a tsuk be a deduction? Ive heard some very compelling arguments that it is proper technique to bend the entry arm on a tsuk.

Does the FIG have their judging course online? It would be nice if they did. That way judges around the world could go right to the source if they have questions. Anyone can write to them with questions but it would be nice to know for sure you were getting the one true answer and not just somebody's idea of what's supposed to happen.

The percentage is increasing. And some of the best judges in the world who are technically GREAT were gymnasts back when back tuck on beam was banned. WAG has evolved far further and faster than has MAG.

Well said Rick. So very very true! I have listened to a few judges comments down here and it is frightening, the lack of knowledge and technical expertise. Shocking in some cases.

This is interesting to me because I am working on my becoming a judge in the U.S. for J.O. I was only a level 8 gymnast and decided I would never try to judge level 10 because I never did those skills.

But someone has to judge the elite I guess. Do we have a percentage of how many of the elite judges were former elite gymnasts?
