Skating and Gymnastics video

If, like me, you couldn’t muster enough enthusiasm to watch the The Progressive Skating & Gymnastics Spectacular, here’s a short clip linked from UNORTHODOX GYMNASTICS review.

Click PLAY or watch Crank it Up on YouTube.

There’s another profanely negative review on Aunt Joyce.

Actually, the stuff the guys do at these Spectaculars is quite good. Reasonable difficulty with panache and humour. I’d watch an edit of the Men’s gymnastics.

But a backspring on beam in a short skirt? Most 7yr-old gymnasts would be disappointed with that level of “difficulty”.

I’ve been told at things like this, and on the TJ MAXX tours, the men just cut loose. They do unorganized, competitive play, each guy trying to outdo the last guy. Whatever natural competitive differences exist between men and women aside, (because at this point, this level of female athlete is also supremely competitive) I’ve always wondered why (if true) the men are so much more “showy” then the women, who water down everything. Offhand, I can think of three possible combinations: 1. the window is larger for men, so missing 6 months due to an injury isn’t, time-wise, as inhibiting as it would be for the women, so injury-avoidance isn’t quite the same concern; 2. the women have much stricter, more controlling coaches; 3. the men are older and conceivably capable of making their own decisions, compared to the women, who are younger, and probably still being handled. Any other reasons why the women’s side would be boring during these events?

I noticed the same difference between the men and women at the Tour of Gymnastics Superstars in ’08. Don’t get me wrong, I LOVED watching the women perform and they still did a lot of tumbling. However, the men were more entertaining because they really didn’t hold back.
