Shawn Johnson – new website

shawnjohnson.net has had a makeover. Twitter features prominently.

@ShawneyJ

(Looks good. But how can any new design in 2010 not have an RSS feed? Bill Gate’s new site designer forgot RSS, as well. It’s finally been added.)

One of her “favorite videos” is World’s Greatest by CdO90. I’d started to forget what made Shawn the best gymnast of the last quadrennial. This edit brought it all back.

Which is your favorite of Shawn Johnson’s many great skills? I’m going to say my top three are (1) her double twisting DLO dismount from bars (2) double twisting double tuck on floor (3) her straddle jump 1.5

(1) her double twisting DLO dismount from bars
(2) double twisting double tuck on floor
(3) her beam dismount

She made HUGE tricks look easy. And fun.

i think shawn is great and all. and she had some AMAZING stuff in her routines. but i don’t think she was the best gymnast in the last quadrennial. she was good. but she wasn’t the best.

My favorite skills of hers was actually her L turn on beam. She made it look so controlled and pretty. I also liked her double turn on floor since it went perfectly with the music.

Who was the best of the last quad, then, alexa?

i loved her bars dismount, back handspring back handspring layout on beam, and her double double on floor!

I thought Nastia had a pretty rough 4 years. Problems and injuries.

But capped it off with an historic Beijing Olympics.

Recall that was the first time that Nastia beat Shawn one-on-one in competition.

Seems I remember that WRONG. … My point should have been that Shawn was a big favourite over Nastia by the end of that Quad.

and in my opinion it was a fluke. Don’t get me wrong Nastia deserves everything she has won, but Shawn was on a completely different level. The judging at the olympics seemed to take a turn that favored artistic over big skill gymnastics….which is exactly what the code is not. Looking at the just the code, SJ was the best American gymnast I have ever seen…but when u add presentation in and all that jazz…the battle between her and nastia is even closer….doubt my rambling makes any sense.

Nastia beat Shawn at the American Cup in 2008 too. I’m not sure why that wouldn’t count as ‘one on one in competition’ unless one of them wasn’t American.

Oops. Thanks Katie. … I struck out my misstatement in that comment of mine.

The new website is definitely focused on her celebrity and personal appeal. Of course gymnastics is a big highlight but its definitely not the only highlight. Why do I point this out? B/c its obvious that her focus continuos to be endorsement deals (nothing wrong with that) and not necessarily gymnastics. Regardless of whether she just becomes another celebrity personality or enters the gymnastics arena I hope she retains that positive attitude ~and does a bit more publicly to support gymnastics :-P

both are amazing, and on a different the results may have been different, but nastia’s win was by no means a fluke either. in my opinion, it’s nastia who was just on a different level. the way i see it, shawn is the better athlete, and nastia is the better gymnast. she has the whole package.

“and in my opinion it was a fluke. ”

It wasn’t a fluke, it was the plan. Nastia was working for Beijing, THAT was her main goal. And when she qualified about .4 below Shawn with a fall, and then performed that UB in TF, everyone was feeling it coming.

I don’t believe saying Shawn, or Nastia, for that matter, is the best gymnast of the past quad is a fact. It’s just an opinion, as they both have something the other lacked. They both had issues, Shawn had serious issues in the dance elements, Nastia had serious issues with anything tucked and also with crossed legs. Neither gymnast was particularly innovative, but I loved Nastia’s lines and competitive fire.

If you wanna see a gymnast with big power who could sell a routine and had huge leaps, Liz Tricase is my suggestion. She was one of my favs in the 2001-2004 quad. Sadly, she didn’t have the leaps that would get big credit in that code (which now have basically no value), but they’d be more than enough today!
