perfect Yurchenko 1/1 vaults

The comments on the Tatiana Gutsu post have gotten a bit heated. I’ll throw a bit more fuel on the fire with this Gutsu v Miller comparison …

Building on the NCAA 10.0 Yurchenko vaults post, who did the better vault?

1992 Olympic Games, Women’s All around competition. Shannon Miller Vault #1.

Shannon!

Even as a 13 year old newb to gymnastics, I saw that Shannon had the better vault. I noticed the leg separation and flexed feet even as a gymnastics NOOB.

Gutsu over Miller ANY day

Gutsu.

I think Shannon had better form and a better landing, but Tatiana had better height off the horse and dynamics.

Miller did the better vault, but she also got the better score, 9.975 to Gutsu’s 9.950. There are weaknesses in both vaults: Gutsu had the small leg split, Miller has a very severe back arch. However, as Diana said, this was an AA competition not a vault final, Shannon lost the AA by overdoing her floor landings, not because of a miss-scored vault.

Agree with Eve, Gutsu had great pop, but Miller’s was more polished, better landing position too.

Thanks for the highlight Rick!

Now granted I’m slightly biased by I think Shannon had the better vault.

Both vaults are superb. Shannon’s is slightly better I think, too.

The judges got the ranking right this time.

But they couldn’t rank Gutsu’s floor appropriately. Come on – put THAT video up.

Miller has the better vault. Gutsu did not have better height or distance and Miller has much better form and landing. Milelr was not as piked as people like to use as an excuse

Miller lost the AA because of the judges on bars. NOT because of floor
3 judges gave her a 9.9 and that is what cost her the AA.

Miller has one landing on floor and it wasn’t even nearly as bad as Gutsu being an inch and a half from touching her hand to the floor. She underrotated it.

TP, I didn’t because I’m not a fan of it. I’m not ranking these videos. I’m putting up (at this point) my favorite Olympic moments.

MostepanovaFan is a known Miller hater. His opinion is biased.

Yes Miller’s vault was better but it was better by a lot more then .25 and the judges. So while these vaults were ranked in the correct order that didn’t matter at all in the end because the difference is what cost Miller the gold as well as the cheating UB judges and floor judges ignoring Gutsu’s hand almost being down

Glad to put up that Floor, TP. … From which competition?

#17 gYmnastfan on 01.22.10 at 2:42 pm

I think TP means Gutsu’s floor from the 92 aa.

I have seen coverage of Milles floor from a different camera direction and the step back didn’t look nearly as bad as the NBC angel.

MostepanovaFan is not a Miller hater, nor is she a he. Miller’s vault was certainly better, I was merely pointing out that she did score higher than Gutsu on the vault, which the original post didn’t make clear.
The judging in 1991 and 1992 in general was out of hand, if a gymnast wasn’t in the 9.9s on every event they wouldn’t medal, the judges did not leave themselves room to distinguish between the top girls, so they all ended up with almost identical scores, even when the actual performances were very different.

MostepanovaFan is actually a very knowledgeable and unbiased fan. Many YouTubers have learnt a lot about gymnastics thanks to HER amazing montages. I’m sure I’m not the only one being grateful for HER effort and dedication. HER opinion counts a lot.
fireSPEEDY, Gutsu’s hand was almost down? Where exactly? By the same logic, Miller almost fell on her arse on her second pass. Both took a big step and were not even heavily deducted for that. Barcelona will always be a big overscored feast to me, at least for the 3 teams that made the podium.

MostepanovaFan is a Miller hater in my opinion and just because she makes a lot of videos doesn’t mean her opinion matter’s more then anyone elses.

Gutsu’s hand was almost down in her first pass. Miller’s butt wasn’t anywhere near the ground on her pass.
