perfecting full twist on trampoline

George H. Hery is one of the most recognized figures in the gymnastics world as an acclaimed gymnast, acrobat, performer, and mentor. For over 40 years he has been one of the most well know clinicians and presenters worldwide on trampoline and acrobatics. …

Click PLAY or watch George on YouTube.

I like everything about this sequence. Artistic gymnasts can do exactly the same progressions, but with an Artistic arm position.

The next drill I’d like to see Krista do is 1/1 twist to prone fall on a throw mat. … There’s something odd about the way she finishes the twist. That drill would improve her “untilt” more cleanly … and help her finish the twist earlier.

I’ve got George’s Trampoline Flipping and Twisting DVD. It’s solid.

You can find additional DVDs and booklets linked from his GymSmarts page.

curious as to what you mean Rick when you refer to “artistic arm position”?
thanks

I’m thinking he means to wrap the arms across or torque the elbows.

I like the “normal” arm position. Elbows bent and tight to the side of the body. Hands just below the chin.

Gymnasts from this arm position can raise or lower the arms to slow or increase the speed of salto rotation. As needed.

So, let me see if I have this…

What you’re saying is that the key to perfecting the full twist is to do a back tuck before and after it, and then if that doesn’t work…

Do lots of fulls in a row?

Did I miss something, or is that one of the most useless “Gymnastic Minute”s ever?

I’m sure that he is a very good coach, but that is like saying you can get better at whatever you are doing wrong by continuing to do it a lot. I think we have too many coaches training kids that way already.

No offense to George, but I would like to see what kinds of drills and training he does to get to the point of kids doing nice straight fulls to begin with.

Hey Troy. I understood him to “mean” that those are progressions. First add salto before and after. Later do 1/1 twist series. Standard progressions in the old Soviet system of the 1980s and 1990s.

That’s cool. I guess my suggestion would be to change the title so as to be a little less confusing.
