Nina Kim was an integral part of the University of Utah team as one of their two All-American seniors, but was also best friend of Olympic Champion Nastia Liukin and got to travel to Beijing alongside Nastia. In this interview, Nina talks about how her relationship grew with former WOGA teammate Nastia Liukin and watching her journey to Olympic glory.

Have you seen Nastia’s new website?
It promotes her travel as a clinician, motivational speaker and for appearances. … Not all that easy to do if she’s supposed to be in the gym training full-time.
This initiative is getting some negative buzz on the internet. I’m happy to see Nastia organize her own personal schedule. … But is a retirement announcement next?

I saw a whole thread of negative comments on
IG Forum… somewhere.Who cares if she retires? She had a great career and achieved the ultimate goal. I don’t know what the big deal is. Going out on top is never a bad thing.
The Liukin’s pay for Nina to go places and be Nastia’s friend. I am sure she has nothing but nice things to say about them.
There was not a whole negative post about this on IG. There was one person saying she has her whole life to make money. The rest are Nastia stalkers so they love everything she does.
Not on IG Forum. I saw a string of negative comments somewhere about Nastia being “money grubbing”.
I disagreed, of course, and didn’t pay much attention to them.
TP, it’s fine with me if she retires or doesn’t. I just don’t like the fact that she still says she’s going to compete. She was saying that in 2009 and then she was only able to do shaky beam routines at Nationals and pulled out of worlds. I think she should just be honest about what she’s going to do.

Maybe she is being honest. Maybe she wants to come back but is enjoying her life outside. Maybe she is confused. I see no reason for her to comeback. She should have left on top but rumor has her doing the next dancing with the stars next year anyway (this year now)
I just find her phony. Everything she does is to get some kind of credit. She has to try and look good despite the fact we all know from the Memmel and Johnson situations that she isn’t the nice person she pretends to be.

The people at IG don’t have to agree with you. Just because you speak doesn’t mean they have to say you are right.

In fact, I have mixed feelings about Nastia’s new website. If she’s going to retire, it’s wonderful. But if she’s going to train, she needs to stop travel and train.
blah@yahoo, where have you heard that nina is paid to be nastia’s friend huh? they might pay for some of her travel, but to pal around with nastia? that’s ridiculous and you really shouldn’t make such accusations without proof, so let’s see it.
and jaim, granted, there are some “rumors” about nastia getting upset after 2005 worlds for getting silver as opposed to gold in the aa, but nothing about anything between nastia and shawn johnson, and further, they are just that, just rumors. unless you have some proof to back this up, i’m not going to be so hard on her, seeing as how i can understand being upset within reason if you feel like you had one of the best meets of your life and lost the top spot by .001, due to score truncation at that, and obviously being competitive by nature on top of that.
back on topic, if she comes back great for her and if not, great for her, but i would be nice to just hear a definitive announcement.
Yeah Nastia if you’re reading this, just be straight with us. You can tell your fans you’re not sure, either, but they’d still like to hear the truth.
Some of you may not undertstand that maybe her agent gives her strict advice on what and what not to say, too. One never knows what is really going on, so it makes it hard for any of us to judge.
Oh, I know it’s all about the agent. On the one hand, I don’t fault the famous for doing their best to work the system and make money. On the other, I do get sick of the lies.
Here’s a thought. Maybe she really doesn’t know if she’s coming back or not. Why does she have to make that decision right now? It seems as though Chellsie, Shawn, and Alicia, to a degree, all have question marks regarding their futures in gymnastics.
I don’t see Nastia as a money grubber at all. At least she appears to be selective about what she endorses.
Nastia’s parents paying someone to fly around with Nastia IS paying her to be her friend. Not like Nastia would ever4 admit that fact or Nina for that matter.

so if my friend’s mom pays for me to fly out and see her, that’s paying for my friendship? that’s crap. they do that because they like me and know me and care about me because their daughter cares about me and i care about their daughter. what’s next? the bride’s family paying for a wedding is them paying for the fiancee to be her husband? for the marriage/relationship they have? no!! paying for a flight is not paying for friendship. it is paying out of the goodness and generosity of their hearts because they have more money than she does (or most people for that matter) and they take an interest in her because she is in their daughter’s life, so she is special to them and they care for her. or who knows, it could be as a gift to the daughter or daughter’s friend that they did that. it doesn’t even seem as if it’s a routine thing anyway, but only happend once or twice.
and nastia fanatics are the ones who have issues!?!?!?
and no, cancelled checks won’t do it because they don’t show the motive for paying for the flight.
I think Nastia is doing the best she can.. I think it’s very noble for her to retire while she’s on top instead of beating her body up even more than it already is. She should deserve to retire now for crying out loud!
