I visited Nittaidai in 1991. And recall drinking tea upstairs with the senior coaches.

Trained in this very gym in 1982 under Eizo Kenmotsu and along side Koji Gushiken. At that time there were probably three or four national team members training for Swallow.

What’s not shown in this picture is the ‘coaches fishbowl’. The windows from which the coaches would look down on practice. They are just out of the picture on the upper left.

The Sumo boys did basic tumbling. Many landing and falling drills. They laughed a lot while practicing, jolly giants.

When I was a gymnast I wish I could have trained in such arena. I have always been a fan of Japanese gymnastics. And go Uchimura and Tsurumi for doing so well at the Toyota Cup!
