Amelia – La La La Human Steps

James Glader linked to perhaps my favourite dance troupe ever, La La La Human Steps. In a video production of a long performance called Amelia (part 1).

I first saw La La La Human Steps on their 1985 tour, Human Sex. The physicality of lead dancer Louise Lecavalier blew me away. I’ve still never seen any other dancer anything like her. The reckless abandon.

This clip unfortunately doesn’t do the live performance justice. But it will give you an idea of Louise’s work. Watch it on YouTube. (Warning – partial nudity.)

The genius behind La La La Human Steps is choreographer Édouard Lock.

I also recommend ‘SALT’ by the same company – incredible…you can find it on youtube.com

…and to answer your first question – NO the dancers are not being sped up, they really are moving that fast!

It’s such a shame that gymnasts need to dedicate 99% of their training time to strength and acrobatic training. Just imagine a gymnast who could move like this on floor. You used to see it in the 80’s, but it’s been missing for some time now.

I agree Chris, Salt was fantastic live. I saw it in the ’90’s and loved it! Was my first La La La experience – mind blowing.

I don’t agree with your statement of the clip not doing the live performance justice… You are presuming that something is lost through the transformation from stage to screen.

I am extremely jealous that where able to see them perform live though…

Thanks for posting the clip!
