I find that coaches underestimate the influence they have on athletes. My main worry these days are things coaches post on Facebook that are seen and later emulated by athletes.

It’s important we take responsibility for what we do outside the gym, that is for sure. That is why I make everything private and keep my personal business personal. Of course, I don’t drink, do drugs, or do anything most people would consider bad or poor role model behaviour. That doesn’t mean, however, that something innocently said can’t be horribly misconstrued.
Facebook in general is a platform for stupidity. I see young coaches posting ridiculous status updates and photos daily, which just makes me cringe. Really, the parents of your gymnasts (or gymnasts for that matter) don’t need to know that you are hungover, but won a drinking contest the night before. We do have a huge influence and hopefully our influence is always in the positive. Though, as tp mentioned, things can be easily misconstrued.
But in terms of FB – young people in general need to be careful. My niece posts things regularly that are beyond inappropriate…
On the video, the people that are going to be doing rude, stupid things are hardly going to be influenced by that. The considerate, nice people will be the ones that take that to heart and they hardly need to. Advertisements like this are nice and all but the nature of the person they are trying to influence wouldn’t even think they’re one of those people depicted!
