I’m checking out a gymnastics drills site called GymDrills.com put together by Will Vaughn. It looks quite good.
GymDrills.com reminds me of American Gymnast’s Gymnastics on Demand service. A collection of video clips showing drills.
GymDrills covers Women’s Artistic Gymnastics, the 4 apparatus, conditioning and flexibility.

An interesting thread on the IG forum started by LilyPod:
… what degrees of chest position earn a deduction, and how many tenths are deducted at each degree? (if that makes sense). Where do you draw the line between acceptable and “too low” when a gymnast dismounts or lands a pass?
I screencapped 4 girls who are currently doing the full-twisting double pike in today’s code at the moment their feet hit the floor. Can anyone use the pics to explain to me who is getting a deduction and who is not? I’m really just trying to understand. …

Elaine comments:
Officially, the deductions are as follows…
Body posture deductions:
- head at hip level: 0.10
- head at knee level: 0.30

Thomas won an award at Woodward West Gymnastics camp. He was the man brave enough to ask coach Alica Sacramone to dance.
Thanks Ron Noe for sending us the link.

That’s Mai Murakami whom Blythe on Gymnastics Examiner referred to as The next women’s gymnastics superstar?
Want to see a double double? She can do it — as a second pass. A 3.5 twist? Showed it in September. A double layout? Not a problem. A triple full? Does it on floor, does it off beam.
The Japanese women’s gymnastics team is certainly on the ascent.

Update – Andy Thornton’s take on Murakami. He feels Japan could push for a team medal, perhaps even by next World Championships.

How many gymnasts have come back to you years later saying, “Why did you let me quit?”
One of the worst things about coaching is when an athlete wants to “retire” who you think shouldn’t.
Sports Girls Play posted an excellent article called Getting Past “I QUIT”.
PARENT TIPS FOR GETTING PAST “I QUIT”
1. Look at your child’s health. ..

6. Take it one step at a time. …
7. Remove unnecessary stressors. …

… Seems to me gymnasts, especially female gymnasts, develop very close friendships at the gym. It’s the shared intense experience that bonds.

I love this system of introducing tumbling used by Tony Retrosi.
It’s fun. It’s safe. And it’s very difficult to make major mistakes in tempo tumbling working downhill. (If the kids are still making errors, increase the angle of the down ramp.)

I like this drill too for introducing twisting, though it’s one of many.
Back twisting from whip back guarantees the beginner will twist “late”.
Late is great.
