Tracy,

Once in while you would just hit it right and the cracking sound echoed throughout the gym. It usually wasn't as bad as it sounded though. What really sucked is when you didn't notice the bars were on the correct setting (usually someone forgot to drop the low bar a notch or two). That was both pain and a feeling of stupidity.

I don't remember complaining about the bruises. I don't remember it really hurting!? Doing an inbar beat, full twist to beat to uprise gave me all types of bruises in the learning process. Couldn't have been to bad because I couldn't wait to work on that! My bar routine was full of every possible wrap combination. (wraps were easier for gymnasts who weren't too strong upper body-wise)

Yeah, I remember all kinds of crazy bruises my girlfriend had from wrapping. While I thought there were some interesting artistic transitions when the bars were closer, I'm generally not a fan of gymnastics that is painful for the athlete to perform. Men's p-bars ooks like a form of torture sometimes.

That was cool. As I'm pushing 40, I can't believe I actually beat and wrapped the bar countless times in my adolescence and still remained healthy.

I'm not so crazy about the 50's routines, but I love those routines from the 60's, 70s and 80s. I miss the days when the bars were close. I'm not a gymnast, so I have idea if the types of routines gymnasts do today are harder than the old ones, but I find the old ones much more interesting, regardless of difficulty.
