Of all the acrobatic activities that should not be “competitions”, Parkour is top of my list.

The running is “Free” … except that you are being evaluated.

I’m not an expert, but I know freerunning has born in the streets and it has born to be FREE. now in the name of democratic competition, it is confined to a specific spot with all kinds of structure and frame – that is in part good… but that primordial sense of freedom is quite diminished within that area which, to me, looks like a cage…

People compete at everything and I do mean everything. From eating, to spelling, to memorizing shit, yodeiing, and beyond. Way beyond. Name some activity and there’s going to be competitions. The only thing it takes to have a competition is for a group of people to all like doing the same thing and for enough of them to either have that competitive urge or just want to spend the day doing something they enjoy with other people that enjoy it too.

Parkour is completely different from freerunning.. Parkour is a practice and a self-dicipline. Its about conquering the obsticale, effectively and efficiently, for yourself and no one else. Freerunning is about crowd pleasing. Sure it looks cool but like any other sport if you don’t win you loose. With parkour success is garenteed and any failure comes from mal-practice…

Thanks Tracuer.

I’d not heard that distinction made between the two terms used by most, including me, as synonyms. I’ll try to be more careful in future.
