I agree with Geoffrey - it's all about the entry. The push is simple if the entry is correct and I can't say enough about the use of a strap bar. Essential.

Geoffrey you made the point I was going to make - thank you!

I have taught clear hips for years with minimal spotting - generally they do drills, and I spot so they know what it should feel like, but strap bar, drills, and the "wall" have helped me teach clear hips faster than plain spotting ever did.

Im not a big fan of spotting, but I do find on bars that it can be really useful in emphasizing good technique and body positions. I personally like to spot free hip from in between the bars.

This is excellent, however, there is a crucial point that I think is not addressed enough here (and this is a point that many coaches do not pay enough attention to, in my opinion) the entry.

The thing that makes a free hip a free hip is not the push out at the end, it's the aggressive drop back in the beginning.

I think another issue is that not all gyms have a dedicated strap bar...or at least one that might be avaialable for use during the UB rotation. More likely you've got coaches with several girls in the group that need to work on clear hips so you HAVE to spot them. I'm actually a big fan of spotting - even on strap bar. But I do recognize the downside of too much spotting - noteably the girls that can do GREAT clear hips when spotted and then they disappear when they go on their own. But with time and patience I've had lots of girls develop great clear hips that I thought might never get them.
