September 20th, 2009 — Gymnastics, salary (contract)
The first time I travelled to Australia for a gymnastics meet, it was Kit and Rod Poole that met the Canadian delegation at the airport.
Great people, … despite the fact that Rod insisted we stop at the pub before checking in at the Hotel. “An Aussie tradition”, he may have claimed.
Kit’s club is looking for a new coach. And is interested in talking to people from overseas.
Attention all gymnastics coaches:
Have you ever dreamed of visiting Australia?
Would you like to teach gymnastics while you are here, and earn an income?
Scallywaggs Gymnastics is looking for experienced gymnastics coaches to join their team.
You will need to have a level 1 or Level 2 coaching accreditation (or equivalent) and be able to teach skills with confidence. Experience teaching tumbling and twisting skills would be an advantage but not necessary. You must also be able to communicate effectively in English.
Scallywaggs is located 1 hour north of Sydney on the Central Coast. We are one of the largest clubs in New South Wales catering for children 10 months through to adults in a recreational program that is the envy of other clubs. We are regarded by Gymnastics Australia as the leading recreational club in the country. Head coach Kit Poole, is the leading presenter of Kindergym programs and has won Kindergym Leader of the year on numerous occasions. She is also the recipient of the Lance Otto award from Gymnastics Australia for services to gymnastics. The club has also won General Gymnastics club of the year for both state and national levels and was the Central Coast Business of the year in 2007
The gym caters to over 750 participants each week in an environment that makes coming to work each day fun.
If you are interested in being a part of our team in 2010 let us know. We offer better than average salary, we can assist with accommodation to begin with and you get to live close to some of the best beaches in the country (we are in summer until the end of February). We are looking for someone to work on a 12 month contract. Our pre school programs run continuously through the year and our recreational gymnastics programs run on a 10 week term with a 2 week break at the end of each term, so if you would like to travel during these breaks it can be arranged.

The next edition will be held in 2010 in Delhi, India.
Glasgow, Scotland will host the Commonwealth Games 2014.
If you’re not one of the 71 participating teams, likely you ignore this meet. But it’s VERY important for the former British Empire nations that do go.

Russian coach Vladimir Chertkov, by the way, many years in the USA, has moved to India with aspirations of raising the level of the sport there.

Hideo Mizoguchi was for many years responsible for the Junior Men’s Program in the USA. He was an important mentor to me and many, many coaches over the years.
The L support is a basic skill that is important to all competitive male gymnasts. Here Hideo Mizoguchi explains how to make this skill great and impress the judges.

Mizo has a video demonstrating an “Iron Cross Machine” for rings, as well.
September 19th, 2009 — dance
Just Another Opinion informed me that the dance I like so much was a tribute to choreography from the great Bob Fosse.
Here’s the original – Gwen Verdon’s “Mexican Breakfast” – that inspired the Beyoncé – Single Ladies (Put A Ring On It) piece. … Set to the Beyoncé music.
The video, featuring three dancers on a plain background and filmed as a single sequence, was inspired by the Bob Fosse choreographed performance by Gwen Verdon. …
Click PLAY or watch it on YouTube.
… Verdon was considered the best dancer on Broadway in the 1950s and 1960s. She is also strongly identified with her husband, director/choreographer Bob Fosse, both as the dancer/collaborator/muse upon whom he choreographed much of his work …
More versions, some hilarious, of the “dance craze”.

The Couch Gymnast relays the bad news:
… The Romanian paper, Prosport just reported that Sandra Izbasa has been badly injured during a workout last night. During training
her Tsukahara vaulttumbling, Izbasa ruptured her achilles tendon and damaged her metatarsals. She was sent as an emergency case to Bucharest by her coach, Forminte, who attributed it to a bad, bad landing.Forminte also said that she was very lucky she had “the presence of mind” to pull her head around or it could have been worse (or maybe that he pulled her around- translation ever an issue!). …
Sandra was training for the Romanian Nationals to be held this weekend.

Kayne West has (finally) personally apologized by telephone to Taylor Swift. And spilled it out on his blog.
Kayne was wrong in every way, … except one.
Beyoncé – Single Ladies (Put A Ring On It) IS a superb dance video. If you’re not one of the 70 million who have watched it on YouTube, see it here.
I can’t embed the video on this site. But here’s one of those great new public TV commercials, this one organized by Trident gum to promote a free Beyoncé concert.

I saw Beyoncé’s husband Jay-Z perform last night in concert. No sign of Beyoncé though she was in attendance at some of his recent shows. Nor did Jay-Z mention anything about the incident on stage.

Little known Jake Dalton has been named to the USA World Championships team based mainly on this vault. I hear he’s done the “Lopez” better, happily.
What’s his second vault?
His second vault is a handspring straight front double twist. (Thanks Matthew. Thanks Kyle.)

Looks good. I’m not convinced that spotting is the best way to teach the skill, though.
Much faster is to learn it and perfect it on safety straps. Then later move it to bars. With as little spotting as possible.
Of course this Gymnastics Association of Texas session was a spotting session. Seems most coaches need to know how to spot a skill before learning how to teach it without spotting.

The Men’s team has been selected:
Jonathan Horton – All-around
Tim McNeill – All-around
Danell Leyva – Parallel bars & high bar
Steven Legendre – Floor
Jake Dalton – Vault
Wes Haagensen – Pommel horse & rings
details and commentary on Stick It Media.
Great to see Tim McNeill from Cal Berkleley still training and on the team. He can contend on PH and PB.
I don’t know much about Jake Dalton. He does a Lopez vault, I know. Leave a comment if you know of a video of it posted to YouTube.

The final Women’s team will be picked after a final selection camp starting September 30 at the Karolyi Ranch in Texas.
Round two invitees include: Jana Bieger, Rebecca Bross, MacKenzie Caquatto, Ivana Hong, Kytra Hunter, Chellsie Memmel, Samantha Peszek, Bridget Sloan, Cassie Whitcomb and Kayla Williams. (Kaitlyn Clark and Alaina Johnson were the two athletes not invited to the final camp.)
…For several injured athletes, time has run out. Petitioned National Team members Olivia Courtney (broken ankle in August), Mattie Larson (double ankle sprain in July) and Sam Shapiro (ankle surgery in June) did not attend last week’s first selection camp and are therefore, per the World Selection procedures, ineligible to advance to the second camp.
