Valeri and his coach Edouard Liukin, from Kazakhstan, were always outsiders. Never favourites of the National Coach.
It did not help that Edouard was not a vodka drinker. Not part of that grand Russian coaching tradition.

I spent a week learning from Eduard Iarov (Liukin’s coach) during the FIG sponsored PAGU training camp in November of 2008 (my athlete and I were the US representatives). Over the years, I have had the opportunity to train with many great Olympic Champions and Coaches from around the world. Without a doubt, Eduard has the finest gymnastics mind I have ever met.
