Yeah, there’s this thing called airbrushing, you see.
I’ve been up close to Nastia once or twice and while she’s not poreless, there’s not a lot of airbrushing required. The girl ain’t ugly. Now, hair extensions are another story.
I think that Nastia is already a huge celebrity even with the “general public” knowing about Shawn. Nastia will be in the spotlight much longer than Shawn will.
Airbrushing occurs even for the most flawless of beauties. Her face in the first photo just screams airbrushing though.
Nastia’s doing the right thing however by sticking to gymnastics. Now if only she’d work on her form.
I think there is a faulty premise here:

I don’t think “Shawn” is going away [in the public's mind] any time soon. She seems to have huge market potential and public appeal. Look at the numbers she was able to pull in to take the DWTS trophy for Season 8 (probably all those young fans voting multiple times, multiple was (phone, text, online voting)
but the more get to know things about Nastia – the more it seems she really has a great work ethic, and positive attitude… and hopefully there is enough market potential out there for two stars of the 2008 Beijing Olympics… but Shawn needs to finish high school first! I keep hearing some people in Iowa get inundated with info on Shawn all the time (hopefully since Texas is a big[ger] state, that doesn’t happen with you all in Texas about Nastia

Yep, it happens with smaller states. During the 2006 games, I got tons of info about Apolo Anto Ono because his father lives in Seattle and even though I live across the state from Seattle, we still got daily news stories about him (not that I minded, I like the guy)
I actually think you maybe working on a faulty premise with your “Something tells me that Nastia Liukin will still be a big celebrity once the general public has forgotten about Shawn Johnson” comment. To be honest Nastia has already been forgotten by the general public, she may always be remembered by the gymnastics community (as she should be) but the average Joe who only watches gymnastics every 4 years could care less about her already. Unfortunately being remembered by only the gymnastics community does not make you a celebrity.
Shawn would have been in the same situation but her stint on DWTS put her right back in the public eye. And the longer she has to do her contractual duties as winner of DWTS the longer she will be remembered by the public.
