Cheerleading an Olympic Sport?

Most gymnastics and trampoline coaches look down on Cheer.

Feel it’s a lesser sport.

Pooh-pooh the make-up and glitzy clothing.

But – fact is – Cheer is a competitive sport on the ascent. Artistic Gymnastics a competitive sport that has flat-lined. Or is in decline in most parts of the world.

About.com Cheer did a poll. Here’s how the general public (and many Cheer enthusiasts) voted:

It would not surprise me if Cheer is seriously considered for the Olympics in my life time.

BMX biking was added in 2008. Skateboard is in for 2012.

Baseball was dropped.

In so-called democratic amateur sports organizations, Cheer may take over Gymnastics due to sheer numbers of participants.

… Or check the thread started by Bill Seely, Executive Director USA Federation for Sport Cheering on the Chalk Bucket Forum. Especially if you know an athlete that might want to try out for Cheer Team USA.

Athletes trying out for Team USA must be 18 years of age prior to December 1st. Online applications are being accepted July 1st.

How would they shrink cheer down to Olympic proportions? With all their concerns over athlete numbers, I can’t see them letting in the huge cheer squads. And it’s another subjective sport.

I hope not. Is group gymnastics an olympic sport? Same thing without the bad excessive makeup and skirts and booty-shaking.

For cheering to be considered an olympic sport should’t it be done in a dozen other countries as well?

I was a competitive cheerleader for 4 years and while I consider it a sport it SHOULD NOT be in the Olympics. The games are not meant for those kinds of “sports.” The classic sports are what should be in.

OMG- those crazy, over the top, ultra- competitive cheer moms, trying to get (push) their kids into the olympics!!! YIKES!

Rick,
“cheer” is b—s—.
an activity geared towards choreographing spectator response to athletic events, while physical is NOT the same as the event…..
derivitive and silly…..
beyond ridiculous to even consider it.

Ugh. Make it stop NOW!

No. Cheerleading is not a sport. It’s not hard work, but it isn’t a sport. I’d rather see Olympic tap dancing before I see cheerleading.

that should say, that’s NOT TO SAY it’s not hard work. It definitely takes a lot of energy and practice.

They should just add tumbling, all the aspects of cheerleading are already in gymnastics n one way or another and cheerleading is really just a combination of tumbling and cheasy dance and jumps, sure they work but tumblers spend just as much time perfecting fewer skills. and if it were givin a spot in the Olympics there would also be huge amounts of controversy in the scoring because each judge cant be watching each individual athlete for deductions and they can’t have a judge for each athelete. And whatever team losses will claim the judges were ONLY wqatching the weak aspects of their team,

While I am sure there is plenty of work put into Cheerleading, those of us on the other side of the Atlantic have yet to fully understand the finer points and so believe there are more worthy sports fighting for a place in the Olympics.
Remember for every new sport added, one has to be dropped!

Cheer haters,
Why is gymnastics a sport, then? Cheerleading takes a lot more energy then gymnastics. Why is figure skating a sport? PLEASE! I’d LOVE to trade my daily cheer practice for one of those pansy ass figureskating practices.

You throw balls, we throw people, and SMILE while doing it.
