From the official press release:
Gymnastics Canada is very pleased to announce the appointment of Mr. Vladimir Lashin as the new Women’s Artistic Gymnastics (WAG) National Coach / High Performance Director. Mr. Lashin is a university graduate from the State central Institute of physical education in Moscow, Russia, an NCCP Level 4 certified coach as well as FIG Academy expert since 2008. He has many years of working experience with the WAG National Team athletes and coaches in Canada, Australia and Russia. …
Mr. Lashin will start his new full time duties on June 1st 2009 (on a part basis as of May 19).
Lashin has been coaching at Omega in Vancouver, Canada along with his wife Svetlana.
He was coach of Gael Mackie, now at Utah. And a number of other prominent FIG gymnasts
I don’t know the man. But his reputation is a demanding, old school east European style. I’m not convinced that’s what Canada needs right now.
His tenure will be controversial, I predict.

Very Good, Finallly, Canada is off to a Good Start and Vlad is the man! Woman’s National Teams should be in good hands! Look what Edouard did for the men’s team.
Crossing my fingers.
I used to go to OMega, he is old school russian, some of our canadian girls really need to work on there dance, just watch charlotte mackie or brittany rogers, beautiful dance (we need more anna pavlovas, big skills so elegant, vs chellsie memmel, big skills but no grace)
I’ve not heard pleasant things about his psychological demeanor with the girls, though.
I’ve witnessed Vladimirs coaching and its absolutely brutal and totally unethical. its not going to help the women’s program in canada, will only bring canada into the dark ages. It’s a real step backwards, he’s old school soviet and is horrible to those gymnasts, anything goes. they are broken and burnt out really young from all the mental stuff he plays on them. Everyone here in canada has seen or heard about his treatment of his athletes, constant threats, he disowns them if theyre injured or don’t do well, deprivation of water and encouraging vomiting and laxatives for weight control, daily weigh-ins, and really nasty mind games. Oh, and he’s never been a team player, just ask any other coach in canada thats worked with him on a team. This decision of head coach by Gymnastics Canada will come back and bite them, and very hard too!
WHO MADE THIS DECISION TO HIRE HIM AND BASED ON WHAT CRITERIA. FROM WHAT I’VE SEEN AND HEARD ABOUT THIS COACH ARE NOT GOOD QUALIFICATIONS FOR LONG TERM ATHLETE DEVELOPMENT UNDER GYM CANADA’S PHYLOSOPHY. GETTING RESULTS AT THE COST OF RESPECT IN SPORT. IT WOULD HAVE BEEN GOOD TO HEAR FROM HIS PREVIOUS ATHLETES AND ALL GYMNASTICS CANADA TEAM COACHES BEFORE THIS SELECTION.
I HOPE IT ALL WORKS OUT OR WHOEVER HIRED THIS MAN SHOULD BE FIRED.
He may use as well as the other coaches old eastern ways but they get results. All girls who enter competitive gymnastics and who as well as their parents strive for national results, will always end up broken physically and mentally- if you want results, but as a parent most of these girls injuries are preventable- its the parents who push not the child- the coaches are goal oriented but also compassionate, I have physically seen them scold a child/girl but then tell them why- they fear injury as much as a child- cause it is there investment to. I think Gymnastics Canada made a great decision- I think parents make the bad decision.
Hopefully, Canada is able to be comparible to other nations now! Perhaps receive funding lost from the poor results on the bid to 2008 Olympics- it is a beautiful sport but we do not support our athletes enough financially and as a result we leave to much to the coaches to decide-
As for criterium of why Vladimir was hired his results speak for themselves as did the club he held under him the question is can the club survive his noticeable absence!
