gymnast Elise Wheeler – Southern Utah

So much attention goes to Georgia, Alabama, Utah and the other BIG NAME schools, that great gymnasts in the rest-of-the-NCAA are overshadowed.

For example, I’d never heard of Elise Wheeler from Southern Utah. Nor met her great coaches until this year. (Watch an interview with Scott Bauman, Southern Utah Head Coach.)

Elise is the first gymnast in SUU history to collect All-American accolades, qualifying to 2 Finals.

… “This was just an amazing performance tonight,” head coach Scott Bauman said following the meet. “To qualify for one event was a big deal, but to qualify for two is absolutely huge! This is an incredible night for Elise and an incredible night for our program.” …

What is “line”, good or bad?

Elise has good line.

it’s the shape of the body during the routine. The more the gymnast makes a straight or curved line, the better.

Anything like an angle in the body at any point is bad line.

So it is not being piked or arched? And I just want to make sure is it an actual form thing or is it just saying that we like thin tall girls?

“good line” =straight body?

Some people refer to line when they do mean the girl’s body type. Sometimes a certain body type does help “show off” a good line. That blurs the distinction a little. But in my opinion, “good line” = the shape you’re supposed to be in when you’re supposed to be in it.

If you’re supposed to be arched, then have a good smooth unbroken arch. If you’re supposed to be hollow, then have a good smooth hollow. If you’re supposed to be straight, then actually be straight (no ribs and butt). Shoulders closed when they don’t need to be or *shouldn’t* be is a bad line, an unintentional slight pike when the hips should be flat is a bad line, etc. It’s not that “pike” itself is bad, or “arch” itself is bad. There is undoubtedly some opinion that will vary from person to person on what is “good.” Geoffrey and I disagree about what a good line is in a cast to handstand. Function and aestheticism may form the basis behind why most lines are considered good or bad.

Cool. I’m a bit more interested in seeing releases though…

Elise Wheeler was a Junior national team member back in the day, she actually trained with Ariana Berlin a bit before Ariana’s accident. She’s definitely not a no name level 10 or anything…
