best flooring for gymnastics gyms?

Michele Soucy asks us what’s the best material to cover concrete between gymnastics apparatus in our gyms.

Good question.

I’m not sure.

In my gym we have red and gold tiles on the floor of our public common area. They are easy to clean and sanitize.

In the gym, most of the concrete is covered with carpet tiles.

Carpet is difficult to keep clean. I really don’t like carpet. The only advantage is that a stained carpet tile can easily be swapped out with a new one. Here’s the glue and trowel we use to affix new tiles.

Better is one section of the gym where instead of carpet we are using an old wrestling mat as a base for other mats.

Do you have a recommendation for what to use to cover concrete floors?

What about rubber flooring?

At our gym, we use old (panel) mats for some spaces, new mats we didn’t like for others, and more recently started using foam tiles such as these: http://www.wondermat.com/images/customer/picho004lo.jpg in other areas. In one spot, we used some left over floor foam, which worked nicely.

We covered the place between apparatus with our old gymnastics floor (13 by 13 meters – 15 years old). When we bought a brand new one, we just cut the old one to fit.

We have done it a few different ways and when we built our new location we went wall to wall carpet bonded foam. As long as you own a heavy duty vacuum and clean it weekly (good job for a parent who needs to do some volunteer work) it works awesome. Whole gym is padded.
