… Dancing last among the 11 couples, Johnson and Ballas performed an athletic, fast-paced routine that included a few front and back flips. They scored 25 out of 30 points, tying them with rodeo champion Ty Murray and partner Chelsie Hightower for the evening’s fourth-highest total. …

“Many noted how out of competition shape Shawn has gotten since Beijing. ” And this matters for this show because? Nothing. She’s training a different set of muscles right now! Of course she’s going to look different. Get over it all ready. When she comes back (which I do think she will), she has plenty of time to get back. Chow’s a smart coach.
Just move on and realize that this may help her become a better gymnast.
“Out of competition shape” – well, why should she be in competition shape when she’s not competing at the moment?! And what’s the point about mentioning this anyway? Is it the pc version of “She’s gotten fat by gymnastics standards”?
Where did these many note this? Is it a gymnastics site or a dwts site?
It’s a meme that I started, Cher. Shawn is fat.
I think it means she is not coming back…and even if she does its going to be harder and harder for her to do so the more out of shape she gets. We’ve seen this before with many gymnasts, who cant come back after getting out of shape.
At this point I would say its not realistic at all to say she is coming back.
Over the last few weeks I’ve seen perhaps 7-8 comments on different DWTS posts noting that she seems to have gained weight.
Only apolytongp said she was fat.
The costume this week was more revealing.
“We’ve seen this before with many gymnasts, who cant come back after getting out of shape.” Sure but we’ve also seen gymnasts do okay even though they were out of shape. I still remember Big Zmeskal’s Double layout. Big Jennie T. had one too. I’m not saying Shawn’ll show up with a double layout. I’m saying that just because she’s getting bigger doesn’t mean she can’t do gymnastics anymore.
I would not say Shawn is fat. To me, it looks more like her body is changing. Gymnastics has probably delayed puberty and it’s just catching up on her. She just has a very muscular build.
To go along with Ally, She’s also doing a different sport which is going to put different muscles on your body. Dancing, especially ballroom dancing needs a very strong core (not saying gymnastics doesn’t), especially for the Latin dances.
ok peoples she is not that out of shape, she is just not as toned as she use to be. I am a D1 college athlete and man sometimes after summer your body looks like crap but it takes a few weeks and it looks as good as new. I dont think we have to worry about her quitting gymnastics bc she is out of shape, bc any really high caliber athlete would have to be sitting on the couch for months to loose everything they ever had.
I don’t think the issue is the type of sport. Shawn is a blocky babe, just like her Mom. She was a blocky Olympian and now she’s a blocky DWTS contestant who has gained a little weight now that she’s no longer training like an elite athlete.

Check out the pictures of Shawn.
Actually Sherg, she’s training more than she was as an elite. She trains six hours a day, six days a week.
“Actually Sherg, she’s training more than she was as an elite. She trains six hours a day, six days a week.”
More time training doesn’t mean more training accomplished. She is not training like an elite athlete anymore. If she was, she wouldn’t have gained weight.
dude, you can train hard and gain wieght. You have to limit intake to keep weight off. Chellsie Memmel has to diet to stay skinny. Doesn’t matter how hard she trains.
Oh…and let’s be real people. Gymnastics is not a high calorie burner. It’s not speed skating, crew, etc.
Dude, Sherg, you have no idea about Ballroom dancing. It is just as hard as elite gymnastics. Dancing six hours a day is extremely taxing on your body. She’s limited in training hours due to age. Most of the other contestants are training 7-8 hours a day.
“She is not training like an elite athlete anymore. If she was, she wouldn’t have gained weight. ”
Not true. It is possible to be in training and gain weight. You gain muscle weight. Muscle mass is denser than fat which can translate to weight gain but fat percentage goes down.
Shawn is not gaining muscle weight. She’s gaining fat weight. That’s why she looks bigger. There is no way that dancing would make her more muscular than all the conditioning she used to do.
Dancing is not speed skating, crew either.
She’s a fatty.
Apolytongp: Please post a picture of yourself so we can all marvel at your physical perfection. I know I am eager to see how truly beautiful you must be.
To all of you who think Shawn is gaining dangerous or unnatural weight: I personally don’t see it. I do see, however, and this might come as a shocker, that in the past two years that she’s been in the public’s eye, she has, brace yourself, she has….aged two years. I suspect, and I may be waaaay off here, that within the next two years, she will also age another two years. Perhaps she has some kind of disease that makes her age in direct proportion to how old she is. I’m not sure. I’m not a medical doctor, but I suspect there just isn’t a whole lot we can do about it. As far as I can tell, children age. Eventually, they become non-children, and the funny thing about most non-children is that they don’t look like children anymore. Strange.
I have no idea if she’ll be able to pick up gymnastics again. I do know that most college gymnasts look like trucks. Facts-o-life, near as I can tell.
Ap, no need to respond. I’ll fill in your reply for you, so you can save yourself the trouble:
Apolytongp says: “We can criticise the girl without being all liberal-commie-wussy-Al-Qaeda loving-Nastia’s-bar-dismount-sucks about it!”
Great reply. You may post for me all the time. BTW, I am a fatty.
Apo you crack me up…
And while you may be criticiced for being too outspoken, at least your opinions tend to be honest, albeit sometime too brutally honest for most. You’re hardly anything but entertaining. Which I guess is a lot more than I can say about the panel of experts that abound here who seem to know everything about every topic, sport, exercise and medical condition ever referenced in this blog. With all of the knowledge contained in any one person it’s hard to believe we are not seeing their athletes up on the Olympic podium.
As a college athlete, I think it is a joke that you guys think that most college athletes are a truck! haha wow…thanks for that amazing compliment. yes shawn has gained some weight but honestly i think she will be just fine. gymnastics is so hard and brutal that when you finally get to take a break, your body takes a toll. she will workout and get back in coach. all gymnasts go through it. they have to change all of their habits because their body is not working out as much or as hard as they used to it. everyone get off of shawns back for it! she will be fine. and i would like whoever thinks that college gymnasts are trucks to come to a college gymnastics meet. they are the most in shape college athletes that you will ever see. maybe check into what your saying before you just throw it out there…thanks!
get back in shape i meant to say not coach…
She is fat for a gymnast and dancer. Cute smile not a bad dancer was an excellent gymnast but I think she wont be able to compete as a gymnast now. She isnt obese or unhealthy looking but she has gained weight and thats just the cold hard truth.
I dropped 70 pounds in 5.5 months. Lifted weights during the same period and had 40% increase in pounds on the bar (so gained muscle). Since finishing losing weight, have kept the fat off and gained another 40% increase in lifting capavbility (all lifts, except calf raise when Bw change is taken into account…fatties have super strong calves).
I’m not some Chris Brooks, Steve Legendre type in musculature, but am definitely not a fatty any more. Without a doubt, I have a better current comparative level of fitness and fat appearance than SJ model 2009.
I stopped drinking too. Completely.
