looking for an athletic scholarship?

I’ve attended excellent presentations in the past with Tom Kovic of Victory Collegiate Consulting. Tom is an ideal consultant for those looking for best practice when applying for scholarships.

He’s just launched a new service:

Tom Kovic, current director of Victory Collegiate Consulting has developed a low cost and educational website that will help parents and their children gain valuable information on college athletics recruiting.

Collegerecruiting.tv is loaded with published articles written by Kovic who is a former 19 year women’s gymnastics college coach at The University of Pennsylvania. In addition, the website will offer podcasts and video interviews in an effort to provide families and prospects with the necessary tools to build their personal college recruiting plans.

“As an advisor to families and prospective student-athletes throughout the country, I realized the need to develop a resource website that would assist families in building a strong base of information as they develop and implement their plans for the college search. Having written dozens of articles for many online sports magazines, while conducting several interviews, I realized that there was a natural flow of information that could act as an effective step by step organization tool that families could productively use in preparing for an important life process.”

Kovic’s aim is to provide families and their children with unlimited access to a seamless source of college athletics information that will be easy to grasp and create a strong understanding about how the potentially complicated area of college recruiting works.

FYI- If you ever watched “Born on the Fouth of July”, you saw Tom’s family. His brother’s story played by Tom Cruise. Tom is the younger brother in the movie.

If you’re a great gymnast, relax, you’ll get recruited. If you’re a good gymnast, you’ll still probably get recruited, but you probably want to write letters and send tapes, just to be sure. If you’re an average gymnast, you will have to sell yourself a lot more, but you really don’t need to pay anyone to do that for you. (I hate “services” like this … “only $49 per year?” what a rip off.) Coaches want clean cover letters and concise videos. If you have what they’re looking for, they’ll contact you. No middle man required.

And you should define “great,” “good” and “average” as I stated above, by any Elite-rated gymnast is “great” in college terms. “Good” is Level 10 who made it to J.O.s more than once and moved into the all-around or at least one event final. Those girls get college scholarships, though you may have to point out your skills to coaches and don’t set your heart on just one school.

“Average” is a Level 9/10 who isn’t qualifying to J.O.s regularly but has a solid history in the sport.

If you think you’re better than results or tapes show, offer to walk on at your school of choice. If you prove yourself, you’ll earn your scholarship. Coaches love good students who want to work hard. Teams need athletes like those.
