I’m often complaining how slow and boring the gymnastics competitions are in Canada as compared with the best of those in the States.
But yesterday our boys competed at their first meet of the season, the Gymtastics Hollywood Stars Classic in Calgary, Canada.
Though the event was staged in their gym, organizer Travis Oxley had transformed the place into something special and memorable. Kids got to dress up like Hollywood stars. Walk the red carpet.
And best of all, try Mission Impossible at the end of the meet. A giant obstacle course.
For a glimpse, click PLAY or watch it on YouTube.
Where EVERYBODY can be a STAR.
=== UPDATE:
Katrina Burton from Westwinds agrees:
My kids had a blast!
It was the little details that made this meet different from the rest. Hollywood Theme, team picture before every session, best dressed awards, Theatre lights, Misson Impossible, red carpet for awards, etc. We will definately go back next year and bring the whole team.
And Coach Tracy Jegou from Brooks:
Rick, this was the best meet of the year so far!
The kids had a blast and I agree with Katrina it was the little things that made them feel so important. We will be back next year and I reccomend it for everyone!

I have to agree with the boring meets thing. After seeing footage of some invitationals in the US I feel that our kids just don’t get as much fun out of meets. Here in Quebec the three qualifiers and that’s it system really is sad. The lucky 48 will get to sectorials and maybe provincials, but even those meets are just meets.
The whole invitational thing just hasn’t caught on. I am assuming that they money that can be made is just not big enough. Too bad we can’t put more fun into it.
The only real invitatinal in Quebec is Gymnix which is remotelyfun, but even this year they took the provincial streamed atheletes off the podium due to the BLAH world cup.
Kids in the US seem to do a lot more meets too, maybe that is part of the issue.
wow gymtastics has a nice website
