name to remember – Destinee Davis

One of the most conspicuous talents I saw last season is coached by Erika Bakacs at Naydenov Gymnastics in Vancouver, Washington.

She has now qualified for the USA Gymnastics Hopes program for gymnasts ages 10-11, scheduled for two national meets this year.

The discussion about yurchenko “height” has always puzzled me…
We take pictures of some of the best vaulters in the world (Cheng Fei, Alicia Sacramone, Chusi) and hold that to our standards. BUT what if we’re talking about athletes that are far from ideal? What about the athlete that isn’t naturally powerful? What about the athlete that is powerful, yet is so short the only way to make it onto the table is to go a bit higher than ideal?

I have a 9 year old athlete, who isn’t naturally powerful (one of those Nastia body types) and is just 125cm tall. If I were to ask her to hit the table in the “ideal” position she would not make it. Yet, she has a fabulous yurchenko pike at 9 years old.

The girl pictured above is either 10 or 11 years old and can’t be that much taller than my athlete. So what if she’s a bit high when she is 10 years old when vaulting at regulation height.

I always have days of the week where we vault onto a lower horse and work on the “ideal”. That way, when the stars align (power, height, weight, etc) she could potentially have a very good vault.

Off topic:
Too bad her mum can’t spell Destiny, the poor girl is ‘destined’ for misspellings and continued corrections for the rest of her life. Yet another ridiculous ‘unique’ name.

Every year there are delivery room nurses, who have to explain to mothers that “LaTreen” is not a classy new name.

APO, you can’t even get an urban legend right. It’s “LaTrina”, not LaTreen.

Every name started out as a ridiculous, unique name. Many classic names have different spellings and variations.
