who had a good year in 2008?

All Gymnastics, All the time covers most of the FIG competitive gymnastics sports.

In a year end round-up called The Good, The Bad, and the Okay … I’ll mention only those on the GOOD list:

Nastia Liukin.
Texas.
Marcela Lopez.
Corrie Lothrop.
Canadian trampoliners.
Eastern bloc rhythmic and acrobatic gymnastics.
Yevgeniya Kanaeva.
Japan and Australia. And even Brazil.
Inna Zhukova.
Belarus.
China.

UPDATE: trex comments:

At the age of 16 Shawn won nationals, trials, 3 olympic silver medals and a gold medal becoming a millionaire in the process. On what planet is that not a good year? I’m so sick of Nastia fan girls trying to diminish Shawn.

Obviously Shawn is not only one of the great success stories of 2008, but of the entire history of gymnastics. She and her coaches are role models for us all.

Sadly, when you are the Olympic favourite, a Silver medal seems a disappointment to many.

Olympic Champion Yevgeniya Kanaeva will be competing at the LA Lights competition in Los Angeles in January.

Good point. I’ll make a note of it in the original post.

THANKS.

” I’m so sick of Nastia fan girls trying to diminish Shawn.”

The same mindset that views fourth place in the team competition as a failure, that promises to jump off a tall building if a team doesn’t win enough, that views silver medal in pole vault from a relative newcomer as a failure, is the mindset that says Shawn had an “okay” year. She did well but she didn’t do what she was “supposed” to do. Just like when Marion Jones promised five golds in Sydney but “only” got three golds and two bronzes. This sad mentality has been around since long before any “nastia fan girl” ever even heard of Nastia and it’ll be around long afterwards.

Nastia doesn’t even have a double back. Valerie should have never married a rhythmic gymnast.

Like Harry Potter is a Dumbledore man, through and through, so am I for Shawn. Say no to Voldemort!

Besides everyone knows that Shawn is really better than Nastia. And they like her better too. Except for Nastia fans. And they are inferior.

Really people, is this silly little exchange really necessary?
Enjoy your favorites, we don’t need a word battle over this.
There are real problems on the planet.

shawn and nastia are both great gymnasts.they both did amazing at the olympics. they have different styles and that works good for both of them.

“Valerie should have never married a rhythmic gymnast.” – really? like seriously did you just say that?

I think you guys are taking the Shawn Johnson part a little to seriously. Anyways, I decided to put “Shawn Johnson outside the gym” on the good list. The amount of money and publicity she received, in my opinion, made her year better than her gymnastics accomplishments this year. I am also not a “Nastia fan girl trying to diminish Shawn.”

How many of my critics actually read the whole thing, rather than just the Shawn an Nastia parts. If you did, you’d realize that I put plenty of non-winners in the good parts and I didn’t just base it on medals.

I agree that they are both great gymnasts and did amazing at the Olympics. TCO, stop putting Nastia down.
