I was very surprised to see kids running on hard wood and vaulting over a Swedish box horse.

It must be 25yrs since I last saw a horse like that in competition of any level.

See the rest of this photo set by sebastian on flickr.

That photo reminds me of the old balance bench which was used in school competition decades ago.

You can still buy one.

That’s funny: Every German gym is equipped with several of these benches. They are not used for balancing – at least I have never witnessed this. They are just very useful and multifunctional: Kids can sit on it, balance on it (turn the bench uside down), walk on id, jump on it, rob on in…

In the UK they still use the bench (actually do a routine on it) and the old horse for club level gym. When I visited there with my girls I was amazed!

They also still sell those vault boxes.

Haha. That’s the same as our ‘vault’! We hate it and rarely use it anymore – all hail the mat stack!

well… those benches are the most highly used piece of equipment in nearly every school in the UK. They are not even used for gymnastics-related things. They are even used in asemblies ect instead of chairs.

And that vault! They are still being used in gyms and schools around the country. My old junoir school recently bought one purely becasue the new version of it was deemed to be unsafe and dangerous. We all hated it becasue sometimes it would fall over on top of you. After 5 years of complaints and countless injuries, they went back to the old days and resorted to one of those boxes. As for use in competition, they are still regualrly used – mainly due to the fact that the height can be changed – by taking out layers.

Although it is a good piece of equipment and practical too, i personally hate it becuause it is heavy and i have recieved many injuries from it. :-(

great photos though!!!

also in relation to the hard wood, it is very common in some gyms and plenty of schools. We did have some mats at our school, but they were very old, and after a few injuries, were deemed to bew unsafe and so got thrown away. Now all we have to run on is a strange plactic covered concrete. It is the sort of surface that a basketball court would be covered with.

That equipment is GREAT for recreational gymnastics. But I would deem it dangerous for competition.

i would agree with that point about it being dangerous for competition. Another dangerous piece of equipment is the springboard. If not new, padded, and safe, then they can be lethal weapons.
