Russian Extreme Fighting – Sambo

Kudos to History Channel for posting some of their shows on YouTube. Internet savvy users (like you and I) will see it there and later tune in their channel on TV.

Mixed martials arts is booming, as you know. Here’s a variation I had not heard about.

Hosts Jason Chambers and Bill Duff journey to Moscow to learn Sambo street techniques from some of the toughest dudes in Russia.

The hour long program is posted in 9min blocks starting with Part 1.

The Wordsmith from Nantucket recommended some gymnastics acrobatics and interesting 3D biomechanical analysis shown in Part 3.

Sambo like Krav Maga could be considered a new martial system/art/sport since it was developed in pre WWII, but not as new as the new hybrid MMA.

Both of these martial art/sport/systems developed due to both countries in developing combat systems for their burgeoning military training as conglomerate systems. Basically they went, sought out everything they could find and stirred it in a melting pot.

With the russian system, this has eventually split off into 3 systems, sambo becoming also a sport very similar to judo. If memory serves, it is still taught to rank and file military. Just like KM, there are a handful of breakoffs and systems that are out there now.

It’s a bit more interesting how all the Russian systems have divurged but still bare similar movements in some regards.

And, no; I didn’t just read some wiki articles to come up with that.

In some ways it could be seen with a similar origin to the USMC MCMAP.
