Bill Sands and collaborators did a study for Ron Brant, Men’s Senior National Team Director for USA Gymnastics, at the Colorado Olympic Training Center.
They analyzed (now National Champion) Alex Artemev who had already done quadruple twist on floor. As it is for Nastia Liukin, this is an important target skill for Artemev.
The research did not come up with any need-to-know conclusions. But the simultaneous video / computer model analysis tool is certainly cool. See for yourself: The Triple- and Quadruple-Twist:: A Case Study
Here is a screen shot to give you an idea how it looks:

Yup the stick figure guy is cool. Also, the finding that quad is like a triple but just packing an extra twist into last possible second (and often landing still twisting or twisting after landing) seems too match what one sees with people going for a bit more twist than what they can really do. It was good to see Sasha paying attention and obviously interested in the results.
One thing that I wonder about is how you see gymnasts notable traveling to the side when they do those long passes with front full punches connected. I don’t like how it looks, even if they pull off sticking it. Think they should travel straight down the diagonal (or in the direction of their run) and get a deduction for the variation from that.
