At Championships USA 2006 there was more talk about Shantessa’s bars routine than any other competitor — including Liukin.
Already famous for competing triple back dismount in the past, this year Shantessa used more unusual skills than anyone else in the meet. Perhaps in the world.
It is refreshing to see an athlete look for a competitive edge by being original. Is it time yet (again) for an originality bonus in the code?

I’d just like to know if the original finding of that dismount was an accident with a lucky ending, or a throw-back to the old days of closer bars!
I believe she has a Chinese coach. Likely it was a throw-back to the days when it was a near compulsory Chinese dismount.
: )
Believe me it was intentional she’s been training that skill for a while. She has talked about it on her online diary, she’s working on adding a full twist to the tuck.
She performed the Muhkina at nationals because she is training the Ma dismount. She will eventually add a full twist when she gets it higher.
