gymnastics – flat parallel bars

In Canada all the top boys gyms have built flat parallel bars.

The National Coach, Edouard Iarov, feels they are essential for learning correct swing technique.

Instead of gripping wooden rails, boys must use the lean of the shoulders to generate swing. Also — flat padded bars are much more forgiving in case of a fall.

Pretty cool.

When my friends and I bought the book, “How to Create Champions: The Theory and Methodology of Training Top-Class Gymnasts”
by L. I. Arkaev, N. G. Suchilin (Hardcover – October 2004), we immediately put the boys on the “blocks”. We saw improvements within three weeks.

Highly recommended.

How did you build the flat parallel bars.

Actually, I’ve never built a set.

I know many of the first generation flat bars were 8 inches wide. Current versions are 12 inches wide.

The padding cannot be too soft or the wrist is put in too much extension.
