adult REC competition in Vancouver

June 1st, 2007 · 2 Comments

by Rick McCharles

This is the 60-year-old champion of the age 40 and older division of the Australian Victoria State “Geriatric Gym” championships 2007.

I went to take photos and video of the competition — and ended up competing myself. We did 3 apparatus of our choice. I picked tumbltrack, horizontal bar and vault. And managed to win all three. (OK, there were no other competitors over 40.)

I’m sitting out another big Adult Recreational event in Vancouver:

ADULT MEET – This event is too much fun to miss! Whether you compete in one event or go for the gusto and do THE BIG TEN, there’s room for every adult – beginner to former champion.

Contact Phoenix Gymnastics for the adult code. All around and team awards will be given.

Note: Please keep beam and floor routines to 2 minutes or less.

Phoenix

… No worries keeping my floor routine under 2min.

Sunday gym starting SEPT 2007

May 18th, 2007 · No Comments

The most exciting news from last night’s Board of Directors Meeting is the decision to open a third night of training.

On a trial basis, we will offer Sunday nights as well as Tuesday and Thursday next season.

Sounds crazy? Crazy like a FOX. The advantage of work-out on Sunday nights is that there is rarely any conflict with any other social events. In the 1970s Sunday night practice was the most popular of the week, especially for students.

PS

Summer schedule: every Tuesday evening in July & August 6-8 PM

UPDATE - Altadore posted RESULTS from the meet

The first annual competition honouring Ed Vincent was a success. Nearly 300 competitors attended over 3 days.

age 69 - gymnastics keeps you young

I told Ed that it had taken 6 decades of dedicated training to finally get some National recognition. (He was mentioned on the national TV news.)

Ed was also awarded with a number of tributes including an all-expense trip to Vegas for himself and his wife to see some of the Cirque du Soleil productions.

NEW - Powertrack tumbling trampoline

March 6th, 2007 · No Comments

It took all night, but a mighty volunteer work crew assembled our new tumbling trampoline. It is ready for action!

Ours is the same model used by Cirque du Soleil, rigid enough for heavy and powerful adult athletes. It is impossible to “bottom out”.

tumbletrack.jpg

Safety

By far the biggest risk factor is abrasion. If you fall on your knee or elbow — you will get the worst “rug burn” of your life. The 2-string bed is like a cheese grater.

Recommended is tumbling with socks or gymnastics shoes. You might want to tumble with sweat pants and a sweat shirt to protect knees and elbows.

Younger and lighter athletes may prefer adding a 40ft tumbling mat on top of the Powertrack. This softens the surface and reduces the chance of rug burn.

Rebound Products in Toronto is the manufacturer.
